DUNCANVILLE WINS 3rd STRAIGHT STATE TITLE

March 16, 2021 by Alan Branch

Duncanville came in on a mission. It was a year ago that Duncanville and other teams came to the state tournament with the goal of winning it all. Only to have their game postponed and later canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Fast forward a year with several key pieces still in place from the previous team, the Panthers wanted to finish what they started. A chance to win yet another championship. Duncanville comes in with SMU signee Zurich Phelps who is a special talent, but he has a strong supporting cast in Damon Nicholas (Sam Houston St.) and guard Juan Reyna(Alabama St) ’23 Ron Holland and ’22 C Ford.

The game was a rematch from an earlier matchup in the season against Austin Westlake who had the same goal in mine. With a team loaded with seniors featuring KJ Adams a University of Kansas signee, Cade Mankle (Colorado School of Mines) and point guard Eain Mowat who has been a starter for the last several years gave Westlake hopes of winning their own championship.

Both teams came out a little slow missing some easy shots and free throws, possibly due to some early big game jitters. As each team struggled to get into a rhythm offensively they resorted to getting to simple in their approach; attack the rim and get some easy ones to go in. This helped settle things down a bit although there wasn’t much scoring as it was a 1 point game 11-10 at the end of 1.

In the 2nd qtr it was much of the same but this quarter some of the headliners got it going. Austin Westlake chose to go the route that got them here and that was KJ Adams making plays inside and out. Trying to get something to fall KJ started to attack the interior of the Duncanville defense and score at the rim. When the defense collapsed he was able to find ’22 Preston Clark for a 3 in the left corner and ’21 wing Cade Mankle for a couple of buckets to keep it close.

For Duncanville Zurich Phelps got himself going in the right direction. Using his athletic ability to get by defenders and finish in traffic at the rim. His defensive intensity picked up as well causing several turnovers to lead to scores. With this effort and a deep 3 from Reyna to end the half Duncanville lead 23-20.

In the 3rd qtr both teams came out and played a little cleaner scoring 14 pts each. Adams for Westlake getting more involved. He was able to get touches in multiple spots and made them count for the most part. He also got some help from Mankle (15 pts). Mankle who is heading to Colorado School of Mines helped stretch the defense with his long range ability. Displaying a quick release bothered the Panthers defense some.

For Duncanville it was more of the same from Phelps( Game high 29 pts). He consistently stayed in attack mode in ball screen or in iso situations. Every time it appeared Westlake was about to take the momentum Phelps made a play. Playing with loads of confidence he seemingly willed his team during tough stretches.

Playing to a standstill going into the 4th it was going to come down to what stars would take control and be more consistent down the stretch. Neither team shot it particularly well all game so it was  Duncanville’s defensive intensity that pushed Westlake’s offense out quite a bit that caused some problems. This lead to several traveling violations or steals leading to buckets. The lead for Duncanville stretched to as much as 9, but Westlake would not go away. They were able to get some interior contributions from ’22 Nehikari Igiehon, ’22 Preston Clark and ’21 Cade Mankle continued his solid play. Adams( 20 pts) was more aggressive and had several rebounds and put backs. This kept it close. With the game still tight Westlake’s Adams missed a 3pt attempt that would have cut it to 1 and that’s when  Duncanville’s supporting cast got involved. ’21 Juan Reyna (15 pts) hit a couple deep ones, but the defensive pressure lead to key baskets by ’23 Ron Holland and a huge and 1 by Damon Nicholas. This helped seal the game as Juan Reyna capped off a historic run by Duncanville with a 3 in the left corner as time expired. Duncanville had come back after a long year of waiting to win their 3rd consecutive championship. Coach David Peavy at the end of the game said “ We knew Westlake would be tough; We really made it hard on ourselves missing a lot of shots and making some dumb errors but we played through it and I’m proud of our guys. They played hard”. DUNCANVILLE 66 AUSTIN WESTLAKE 53

BEAUMONT UNITED, ARCENEAUX WIN STATE AT THE BUZZER

March 13, 2021 by Alan Branch

BEAUMONT UNITED, ARCENEAUX WIN STATE AT THE BUZZER

This time last year everything shut down at the state tournament. Everything was halted to include 6 championship games due to the Covid 19 pandemic. This year was a little different.  6 games spread out over 2 days to decide the champs in 6 divisions.  In 5A it would have the # 2 team in the state in Beaumont United. They have several prospects. # 8 in class of ‘22 Terrance Arceneaux, the class of ‘23 Wesley Yates who is #13 and #34 prospect Traelyn Porchia.  The # 12 team state in 5A is Dallas Kimball. They come in off an overtime win in the state semifinal versus Amarillo. They have the #3 propsect in the class of ’22 in Arterio Morris. They also have backcourt mate Chauncey Gibson who comes in at #34. With the game loaded with several up and coming prospects it was a good eval opportunity.

The game got off to a strong start with ’23 prospect of Beaumont United Wesley Yates. Showcasing ability to shoot it with good range and quick release. He also showed he can score it off the dribble inside the arch. With United and Yates off and running the Kimball Knights chose to turn up the pressure some and unleash Kyron Henderson. Henderson displayed a high motor all night. Very active inside rim protecting and rebounding and finishing at the rim. He helped settle things down for Kimball and allowed them to stay close. He had 5 blocks and 6 boards at the half. To add more punch was ’22 prospect Chauncey Gibson. Gibson has good range and a clean stroke and it was on display as he knocked down a couple from deep. To counter for United they also got strong play from ’23 Traelyn Porchia. He was effective early on hitting 12-15 ft shots. This helped United to lead at the end of 1.

In the 2nd qtr both headliners got involved. Morris was able to get to the rim on multiple occasions and make plays finishing or drawing defenders and Henderson would finish the job. United would turn up their own defensive effort and caused some miss shots and turnovers and they converted them into points. Arceaneaux during this run really showed his versatility on both ends. He had the responsibility of rebounding as well and protecting the rim. He did so very well . He had 4 blocks at the half and 5 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Mostly in the paint at this point. He also got solid contributions from Porchia as well. With Porchia and Arcenaeux making plays United pushed their lead to 17. After a timeout Kimball settled down and got big buckets from Gipson and Morris to help cut the lead. They were able to cause some turnovers and get the lead down to 8 at the half.

In the 3rd qtr. Kimball didn’t let up. They kept plugging away with Morris getting it going from multiple spots on the floor and Henderson cleaning up everything else. They also got contributions from ’22 n Jerqualen Parks. Parks hit timely shots and made plays throughout the game. He would finish with (11 pts). They got the lead to 3, but the Wolves didn’t buckle. Yates, Porchia and Arceaneuax were able to get back in rhythm some and hit a few shots as well as get to the line to help slow the run. They were able to push the lead back to 8 to start the 4th.

In the 4th Arceneaux (24 pts) continued to be solid along with Porchia (17 pts ) for United but Kimball had one more major push. Led by Morris. He and Henderson would combine on a solid run that had the Wolves lead to 4 with 3 min left. After coming up empty on a couple  of shots and 2 turnovers Kimball took full advantage. With just under a minute left Arterio Morris hit from deep on the left wing to take a 1 pt lead. This would be brief as United scored to take the lead back. Then Henderson made another play on a tip in; This was 1 of his 11 offensive rebounds on the night. After going up 1, Kimball caused a turnover and hit 2 Fts to go up by 3. The following possession Kimball got a steal and Henderson was fouled. He missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and this left the door open for Arceneaux and United. Arceneaux dribbled to the left wing and hit from 23 feet in front of his bench falling down tying the game up at 64 to force overtime.

In OT Beaumont United got the tip and missed and Kimball still hot from the end of the qtr run scored on consecutive possessions. For United they missed a couple FTs and allowed Kimball to stay ahead by 2.Playing aggressive defense, United fouled and Kimball was at the line up 2 with under  20 to play and they missed the front end. This left the door open. Down 70-68 Arceaneaux calmly came across half court and let it got from the top of the key and hit with 3 seconds to play only leaving time for a desperation heave. This finished off an outstanding performance by Terrance Arceneaux as he finished with not only 24 pts but he had 7 rebs and 9 blocks to help win the state title. A great game with several next level prospects in it.  BEAUMONT UNITED 71 DALLAS KIMBALL 70.

AUSTN WESTLAKE ADVANCES TO STATE FINAL

March 13, 2021March 13, 2021 by Alan Branch

AUSTN WESTLAKE ADVANCES TO STATE FINAL

This year was a little different due to pandemic. Instead of the final 4 teams in each division playing in the Alamodome; this year the semifinals were hosted at neutral sites. Region 3 Champ Atascocita came in ranked #12 in the state; Region 4 Champ Austin Westlake came in ranked #5. A spot in the State finals up for grabs.  Both teams had been battle tested throughout the playoffs so the tough match up was highly anticipated. Both teams with strong senior classes with some quality playoff experience under their belt.  KJ Adams, Westlake HS (#10 in the latest Texasboysbasketball.com rankings) has been as advertised in the post season, but there are more solid contributors such as Eain Mowat and Cade Mankle. Atascocita has a solid group of seniors themselves in Tom Hart III, Cam Morrison, Kaleb Stewart (#35 in the latest rankings) and others. They come in after surviving a close call a few days before vs Summer Creek. With multiple college prospects on the floor this was a good one to see

In the beginning it was ’21 Eain Mowat who got off to a hot start. He knocked down a deep one in front of Atascocita’s bench and gave them a stare as if to say he was ready to play. This set the tone for Westlake as the spread it around to others to keep the floor spread. Along with Mowat was’21 Cade Mankle and Blake Nielsen who had some early contributions. This also helped Adams who showcased his versatile skill set. KJ on numerous occasions showed solid decision making and found open guys when he wasn’t in attack mode himself.  For Atascocita it was Cam Morrison who helped settle them down after an early Westlake run. Cam showed ability to finish at the rim and also hit mi range shots. At the end of 1 due to Morrison’s efforts it was tied at 14.

In the 2nd Adams got going. He was able to attack through multiple defenders and finish at the rim and also got to the foul line some. While he was causing problems inside Mowat was still solid on the perimeter. If he wasn’t knocking down shots; he was controlling tempo and handling solid on ball pressure; very key as the game went along. Not to be out done was ’21 Christian Ashby for Atascocita. He got into a nice rhythm and hit a couple from deep showing a good clean, quick release. Along with Ashby (12 pts) was Tom Hart III(16 pts.). He had a strong game showing ability to get by defenders and hit mid -range shots. With these 2 efforts; it kept them close at the half.  For Westlake another unsung hero was ‘ 22 Preston Clark. He was instrumental in controlling the glass and clogging the lane up for the Chaps. His efforts were key when Adams picked up his 2nd foul. Depsite the foul trouble the still lead at the half.

Both teams came out with a strong on both ends in the 3rd qtr. Atascocita ramped up its defensive pressure to help go on a couple runs.  During those runs Hart was real good making play after play. Hart also had the responsibility of hounding Mowat and on a couple of possessions Adams. To help Hart Ashby continued his hot hand as he hit a couple more from deep. This time to get the Chaps lead down to 5. Each time Atascocita would make a run, Mowat and Adams would make a play. Adams was physical and it showed on a couple of plays where he finished through contact and got and 1 opportunties. Commanding extra attention also played a factor in Preston Clark and ’22 Nehkhare Idiehon making plays on the interior as well.

In the 4th Westlake  came out with intentions on blowing the game open with a 3 by Clark and Adams ( game high 21pts) doing damage but Atascocita wouldn’t go away. They were able to get some easy buckets and turn some long rebounds and turnovers into points. But as they got closer and the intensity turned up Mowat answered the bell. Mainly from a facilitator stand point and handling the pressure. His savvy and IQ putting guys in the right spots and delivering solid passes were the difference as he found Clark and Adams late to seal the deal. In the end Westlake’s size and ability to handle the pressure was the difference. Austin Westlake 57 ATASCOCITA 44

Battle of I-35 Part 2

BATTLE OF I- 35 PART 2

SAN ANTONIO JOHNSON VS AUSTIN WESTLAKE RECAP

Playoff time!!! Round 3 is always a very interesting round where you typically get the stronger teams match up in the bracket. In this one I had a chance over the weekend to lay eyes on who most believe are the Region 4-6A favorites to make it to the State tournament; Austin Westlake. Loaded with a solid senior class to include Kansas signee KJ Adams. They were up against a solid SA Johnson group who features a couple of guards who can score so it had the makings of an intriguing matchup with several college prospects on the floor.

Neither team disappointed as KJ Adams (Kansas) and his team came out firing on all cylinders. The Chaps scored it in multiple ways during the 1st qtr. Adams led the way with 10 and point guard Eain Mowat had 8 to include a couple from deep. As a team they were very efficient getting to their spots and knocking down shots. On the opposite side Johnson came out playing strong as well. Dual sport athlete Shane Johnson showcased his ability to score the ball multiple ways. Shane who signed with Sam Houston St for football can really shoot it. As defenders backed off from him from a couple previous drives to the rim, he then hit a bomb from 30ft to keep the game close although Westlake still led by 9 at the end of 1. The 2nd qtr heated up even more but this time it was Johnson who added more spark with ’22 Kendall Dow and ’21 Mitch Iden getting in on the action. Iden’s damage was done defensively and on the glass with a high motor; Dow was strong off the bounce getting to his spots and scoring to go along with before mentioned Shane Johnson who continued to score as well. Iden helped slow Westlake’s Adams some and that allowed SA Johnson to outscore the Chaps by 8 to make it a 2pt game at the half.

Both teams came out with a solid 3rd qtr; neither wanting to give an inch. Adams was back in attack mode and doing what he typically does affecting the game. Showed a really good feel for getting to his spots off the bounce and hitting mid-range shots over defenders. Johnson’s guards didn’t relax either as both Dow and Shane Johnson kept it close. Dow, doing most of his damage off the dribble making defenders pay.

For Westlake, Blake Nielsen knocked down a couple of deep balls to help keep things balanced. Westlake is a well coached group and they have guys in Nelson, Mowat and Mankle that will hurt you when left alone as was the case in this one.  Adams (20pts) despite the extra attention made the right plays and got others involved to include’22 Nehikhare Igiehon who was efficient with his minutes. Strong on the glass and finished at the rim through contact. The Jaguars made it tough and even led for a small period but  KJ kept things interesting as he scored it or created opportunities for others to keep Westlake close by showcasing his playmaking  ability with the defense focused on him. Eain Mowat (15pts) was also solid for the Chaps.

In the 4th with it still tight ’21 Mitch Iden for SA Johnson continued his solid play; this time hitting 2 deep 3’s to tie the game in the last couple minutes. His motor was on display throughout and his ability to make plays on both ends. His play along with Dow and Johnson gave the Jags a shot. That was until Dow (20pts) with Westlake up 1 got injured driving to the basket. As a result he had to sit one play and they missed a shot and Cade Mankle hit a big 3 to put the Chaps up 4. After another missed attempt Johnson

was forced to foul and Westlake closed the game out at the free throw line.  Austin Westlake 75 SA Johnson 66

AUSTN WESTLAKE’S LATE SURGE STOPS UPSET BID

AUSTIN WESTLAKE VS SA O CONNOR RECAP

REGION 4-6a Semifinal…Round 4. 2 District champions. A spot in the Region finals on the line always makes it a very tough round where you typically get the stronger teams match up in the bracket. In this one you Region 4-6A favorite Austin Westlake (#5 in the State) coming in off of a tough win Saturday over # 18 SA Johnson. They have a solid senior class with some quality playoff experience under their belt. They have Kansas signee KJ Adams, but there are more solid contributors. They were up against a solid SA O Connor group. They come in ranked (#16in the state) and they also feature a couple of seniors in 6’5 Adam Benhayoune and point guard Isaac Orosco who can both make plays in a variety of ways so it had the makings of a strong matchup with several college prospects on the floor.

In the beginning it was all about Adam Benhayoune. A versatile skill set; kind of a poor man’s Kevin Love who started out on fire connecting on his 1st 3 deep balls of the game. He was on such a roll early on that he had 14 of O Connor’s 18 points. Showing his ability to stretch the floor but also occasionally make plays inside. On the opposite end KJ Adams (Kansas) came out attacking and also hitting a 3 to keep defenders honest. The Chaps kept pounding away and kept it close despite O Connor’s early surge. Benhayoune had 11in the 1st qtr while Adams for Westlake  led the way with 8.

In the 2nd qtr both Adams and Benhayoune continued to play well but a couple of teammates joined the show. ‘ 21 Cade Mankle caught fire and hit a couple deep ones as Westlake started to get comfortable. Things heated up even more as ’21 pg Isaac Orosco got in on the action showing his ability to create for others, but also knock down shots from several spots. His court awareness and IQ controlled the flow for most of the game. He and Adam teamed up in a lot of 2 man situations and he made the right plays. Both teams tightened up a bit defensively to end the half and O Connor still held a 2pt lead

Both teams came out with a strong on both ends in the 3rd qtr. But it wasn’t the ones mentioned previously. For Westlake this time it came from Sr pg Eain Mowat. In a roll of setting up others most of the night he saw an opportunity and knocked down a couple of deep 3s himself. For O Connor their punch came from ’23 prospect Jalon Munoz who hit a couple deep ones himself to include getting fouled on one. His 2nd half contributions were huge (12pts) to help O Connor on pace for the upset.

In the 4th O Connor came out with intentions on delivering the knock out blow. They built a lead as much as 10 with their ability to stretch the D and hit the 3 ball. This time it was ’22 Evan Whaling, He hit consecutive 3’s that had Westlake on the ropes . That’s when Westlake turned up the defensive intensity a bit led by Srs Mowat who had 3 steals during the run and Adams. To start the run ’21 Mankle(15pts) hit a HUGE 3 just in front of Westlake’s bench from about 23-24 ft. This sparked them and Adams got back in attack mode, sensing plays needed to be made with only 4 minutes remaining  and doing what he typically does affecting the game with his ability to get down hill and finish through contact. He was relentless on the glass as well during the critical stretch. He also made good reads finding ’22 Nehikhare Igiehon on a couple of possessions as he showcased his ability to finish inside. Adams (12 in the 4thqtr and 28 pts for the game) took matters into his own hands. Causing or being involved in several turnovers and he got out in transition and finished. Mankle hit yet another to extend their lead and O Connor could not gain any more momentum as Westlake scored 22 in the 4th to overcome their deficit to win.  Austin Westlake 62 SA O Connor 57

Austin Nunez Making the Most of Opportunities

February 2, 2021January 14, 2021 by Alan Branch

2020 has been different for the whole world.

Certain parts of the country are still on lock down, some kids are still at home learning virtually and some scholastic seasons are on pause. It’s caused some schools and conferences to cancel their entire seasons, some to postpone or push back start dates. For some who have started their seasons and even district play; have had to deal with the challenges of quarantining, cancellations, rescheduling just to try and have a season. It’s been tough to say the least; but for some they are being creative.

Despite pandemic, game cancellations; One of the top players in the state of Texas in the class of 2022 Austin Nunez is making the most of his opportunities. He recently took the floor in a showcase in Dallas with the TACA Storm where he performed well in 2 games including a buzzer beater to win in the finale. The event was loaded with numerous next level prospects. This was perfect being that Austin is very competitive. Next stop;  Ryan Silver’s League on the West Coast.

Mr. Silver has put together a league on the west coast that will have some of the nation’s best teams and players playing in the league. One of the top players in state of Texas in class of 22 Austin Nunez is taking advantage of this platform. Nunez who is sitting this scholastic season out due to transfer rules is no stranger to the National circuit. He has played on the Under Armour circuit with Texas Hardwork; soon to be JL3 on the EYBL circuit as well as most recently playing with the National Prep team at Cornerstone Christian School.

“ I’m just looking forward to competing and getting some game action under my belt”.

Austin hasn’t been totally idle; He spends a ton of time in the gym working on skill development with several trainers as well as doing some strength and conditioning to stay sharp. He has noticeably put on a few pounds and stretched out some as well which bodes well for him as he prepares for the upcoming grind.

Austin has a slew of D1 offers from various conferences. The most recent have come from Oregon, Texas A&M, Texas, Arkansas and Virginia.

2nd Qtr: The South Garland Duo recorded the first 11 points for the Colonels as they took a 22-17 lead over Tompkins. Maxey orchestrated a shooting clinic in the second quarter but a combination Kristian Sjolund, Jamal Bieniemy and CJ Washington withstood the run from the Colonels and got the deficit within two points. It’s 27 all going into halftime

3rd Qtr: Tyrese Maxey started the second half where he left off. Adding 5 points in the first minute and a half. The free throw line has been the home for CJ Washington as he has been on the line 10 times. Tompkins strung together a 9-0 run to take a 42-41 lead as Bieniemy produced 8 points in the quarter. All tied up going into the 4th quarter 50-50.

4th Qtr: Tompkins scores the first 7 points in the quarter as the momentum they gathered at the end of the third carried over to the fourth. Tyrese Maxey slowed the Falcons momentum after he executed on three point play. Tompkins had a comfortable 67 to 59 lead with 1:46 seconds left but after a timeout from the Colonels, Maxey and Harris Jr produced a 10-0 run and led 69-67 with 40 seconds left. After a rare occasion we’re Maxey goes empty from the charity strike, Bieniemy dribbles up and knocks down a clutch three pointer to go up 70-69. Maxey knocked down 2 clutch free throws with 3 seconds left as we head to overtime 71-71.

OT: It was still a back and forth affair but CJ Washington continued his aggressive pursuit to the rim as he scored 4 points in the extra quarter. Maxey executed in another 3 point play as the Colonels took a 74-72 lead. Jamal Bieniemy took his team on his shoulders making key layups down the stretch, knocking down 2 free throws and making it a two possession game and hold on to a 80-76 win in the most entertaining game so far in the Alamo Dome.

Player Analysis

Tyrese Maxey, Jr PG – South Garland:
Maxey made history with his 46 point performance as he tied the UIL State Championship Tournament record for most points in a game (Marcus Freidberger, 1947). Maxey made clutch play after clutch play and showed he can wear any hat the Colonels need him to wear.

Jamal Bieniemy, Sr Wing – Katy Tompkins: Speaking Of clutch plays, Bieniemy answered the call when Tompkins needed points. Jamal finished with 25 points, 7 rebounds 4 blocks and the win. Oklahoma Head Coach Lon Kruger picked up a key asset for his Sooner squad.

CJ Washington, Sr PG – Katy Tompkins: Two things generally happened when Washington got to the paint. Either he drew a foul or he made the layup. CJ lived at the free throw line as he was 13-19 from the charity stripe.

Allen vs Austin Westlake (6A Semifinals)

1st Qtr: Allen takes the early 5-3 lead until Jr Big Man Will Baker finishes off a putback to tie it up for the Chaparrals. The duo of Jr Isaiah Stevens and Sr Jaylen Walker produced 11 points to lead the Eagles to a 16-13 game vs Westlake after one.

2nd Qtr: Austin Westlake saw a rise in their offensive production in the second quarter. Future Baylor Bear Matthew Mayer and Texas Longhorn signee Brock Cunningham led the charge for the Chaparrals and trimmed the deficit to one point. Jaylen Walker provided another four points this quarter and led all scorers with 10 going into half. Eagles up 30-28 after two.

3rd Qtr: Will Baker for Westlake started showcasing why he is a high major prospect with 5 straight points and added three rebounds in a two and a half minute span. Allen withstood the Baker run as Isaiah Stevens took the lead and strung four straight points himself. A momentum shifting three pointer by Allen Sr Brenton Mills increases Allen’s lead by 8. A layup by Sr Donovan Parham for the Eagles bumped the lead to 10 points as Allen leads 50-40 going into the 4th.

4th Qtr: Allen Increased the lead by as many as 15 points within the first two minutes of the quarter. A combination of Sr Jaylon Scott and Jerritt Dixon lead the early surge for Allen. For Westlake, Sr Luke Pluymen knocked down two shots and Xavier Signee Keonte Kennedy contributed 12 points as they continued to fight to keep Westlake in the game.

Player Analysis

Isaiah Stevens, Jr PG – Allen: Stevens was the floor general as he dictated pace, continued to be the vocal leader on the floor and scored when the momentum was getting away from his team. He shot a remarkable 71% from the floor as he contributed 12 points.

Jaylen Walker, Sr Forward – Allen: Walker came to play as he provided 14 points and an impressive defensive performance against the D1 talent Westlake possesses.

Will Baker, Jr Center – Austin Westlake: The staff left the game wanting more from Will Baker. He had a early third quarter stretch where he flashed his full repertoire, but didn’t put it all together in longer periods of time. He produced 10 points, 8 rebs and recorded a block as he showed his nice shooting stroke from beyond the arc and fluidity running the floor.

UIL State Championship Day 1 Recap

August 6, 2020March 9, 2018 by Alan Branch

It was Primetime Thursday at the Alamo Dome where the matchups were prospect heavy  for texasboysbasketball.com. Port Arthur Memorial made their first trip to the State Semifinals in school history and Midlothian, who is led by TCU signee Kaden Archie also punched their ticket to the state tournament. Justin Northwest had unfinished business due to last year’s semifinal exit but Alamo Heights have their own aspirations of a state championship. The game and prospect analysis tells the story.

Port Arthur vs. Midlothian

1st: 15 to 12 Port Arthur  game statically balanced with exception of one more made three ball. Archie tied the game with a deep 3-ptr at the half way mark of the second quarter.

2nd: The duo of Jamyus Jones from the three point line and Jordan Valsin with paint touches at will while 4-4 from the line. Wesley provides the go ahead 3 pointer to give Port Arthur the 24-21 at the half.

3rd: The second half resumed where the first half started as each bucket was hard earned. Sr. Caleb Jordan and Evan Marshall  for Midlothian produced 9 points in the third quarter as Archie was in pursuit to find his way to the paint which resulted in something positive for his team. Sr. Thailan Wesley answered to Midlothian’s early run with 7 points in the last 4 minutes of the third quarter. Memorial up 37-33 after three

4th: The contest got chippy as the intensity of this bout saw an increase in intensity.  A rare double foul was issued as the players started jawing back and forth at each other in the beginning of the last period. No point was scored in the fourth quarter until the 6 minute mark as Wesley nailed a contested three pointer to make it 40-33 for the Titans. Midlothian scored it’s first point in the fourth with 3:33 left but Memorial steadily increased their lead and got up by as much as 16 points until the Panthers first bucket. Memorial withstood Midlothian’s late surge and won 61-49 to advance to the title game.

Player Analysis

Kaden Archie, Sr. Wing- Midlothian: didn’t have a efficient scoring outing (4-13 from the field) and forced the issue at times (7 turnovers), Kaden continued to apply pressure to the Titans defense and got to the line 12 times. Along with 18 points, Archie secured 7 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

Evan Marshall, Sr. PF – Midlothian: The Air Force signee came out of the gate with an aggressive approach as he played the role as the rim protector on defense. Evan has shown progressive strides throughout the regular season and this semifinal game showed the steady growth in his game. Marshall stat line was 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Thailan Wesley, Sr. SG – Port Arthur Memorial: for Memorial added 24 points as he went 4-8 from three. Wesley grabbed 7 rebounds as the Sr. sharpshooter showcased his quick trigger and went on a 10-0 scoring by himself in the second half.

Nathan Clover, Soph C – Port Arthur Memorial: Clover was very solid in the Titans outing vs Midlothian. He made life difficult for opposing guards to get a clean look in the paint (3 Blocks) and although shots in the paint didn’t go in as much  as he would of liked, Clover showed comfort operating on the block and generating his own look.

1st: Jr. Avery Anderson of Justin Northwest began the second  tilt on Thursday night with a pull up jumper for the first points of the game. Sr. Brandon Johnson scored 8 of the first ten points for Alamo Heights as he displayed his smooth shooting stroke from beyond the arc. The Texans utilized their size advantage as UTA signee Mason Hix, Oklahoma Football signee Darrell Simpson and 2019 big man Sam Freeman combined for 7 points and 10 rebounds in the first quarter. Northwest up 15-12 after one.

2nd: The Mules obtained their first lead in this contest as they put together a quick 5-0 run in the first minute of the second quarter to go up 17-15. Soph. Charlie Dewitt knocked down a corner three and brought a great dose of energy for Alamo Heights. Jr. Sam Freeman gathered 7 rebounds in the second quarter as he secured 13 boards after two periods and Soph Julien Smith strung together a strong quarter with 5 points and 2 assists in a three minutes time frame.

3rd: Sr. Evan Carcanagues for Alamo Heights contributed the first points in the third quarter as he finished through contact on a layup for the and one opportunity. Northwest applied pressure on the defensive side of the ball as Sam Freeman was the anchor on that side of the floor for the Texans. Alamo City came alive in the third quarter with a 6-2 run but the major rebounding differential in Northwest’s favor allowed them to maintain a double digit lead after 3. 49-36 Northwest

4th: Northwest expanded the lead to 17 points as Julien Smith and Avery Anderson orchestrated the first 6 points for the Texans. Brandon Johnson and The Mules continued to fight to stay in the game as they shrunk the lead within 7 points until Avery Anderson answered with the execution of an and one layup and a block on a jumper in the next sequence. Northwest winning the rebounding battle(37-26) and four players in double figures compensated to the shooting woes the Texans faced early which allowed them to hold on and beat Alamo Heights 65-54.

Coaches Corner

Head Coach for The Texans Mike Hatch talked to TBB about the finale against Port Arthur on Saturday.

“Our players were anxious today but I’m confident on Saturday we will play calmer and closer to our  normal nature of play. The atmosphere and the first game here since last year brought a lot of nerves but we will be better on Saturday.”

Player Analysis

Avery Anderson, Jr. PG – Justin Northwest: Anderson produced 16 points and added 3 assists  and steals in the process. Anderson shot a very solid 47% from the field and his impact on both ends of the floor was critical in the Texan’s win on Thursday.

Sam Freeman, Jr. C – Justin Northwest: Freeman was a monster in the interior on Thursday night as he compiled a double double with 13 pts, 17 rebounds and multiple blocks. Freeman scored on the block, cleaned up on the glass and when he is playing with this energy, it is hard to bet against Northwest on Saturday.

Brandon Johnson, Sr. SG – Alamo Heights: Johnson shot 50% from the field on his way to a 20 point game. Brandon shot 5-8 from beyond the arc and was the leader in the fourth quarter surge for The Mules. Johnson refused to let the game get out of hand as he hit must needed jumpers to keep his team alive.

Day One: Cowtown Tip-Off Classic

August 6, 2020November 11, 2017 by Alan Branch

The Cowtown Tip-Off Classic has arrived to find there place on the calendar of top 10 high school basketball events in Texas. If a fan, college coach or media/scouting service was looking for prospects, North Crowley was the place to be. Let’s also look at the face that this event was the first time the shot clock was implemented at a UIL game (prospects vs the masses). Is it right or wrong for TX is the question.

Friday night was opening night/short night for the Cowtown Tip-Off Classic but the stage and performance was up to par with 2019 Drew Timme a 6’9″ power forward that ranks top 5 at TBB in the state.  Drew opened up for a star studded Saturday on Friday by turning in the top performance of the weekend 37pts/21rbs/8ast.  I knew it would be hard to top this but he is one top 10 prospects in Texas regardless of class. Timme showed the most valued attribute in 21st century basketball “versatility” that maintains through his activity, IQ and mindset. There is not a more recruitable prospect in Texas regardless of class.  There are Power 5 conferences full of programs that would take Timme and continues to show why.

Rockwall HS 2019 Samuel Williamson 6’7″ SG was in the other gym (Crowley HS) where we were informed by (Texas Impact Staff) that he delivered a 24pt/14rb/4ast performance.  Sam is a top 10 player with multiple power 5 conference offers.  He reportedly showed his usual balanced high IQ game. Sam’s willingness to rebound has obviously improved which potentially develops him into an impact guy.

The Elephant in the gym was the 30 second shot clock.  There were many debates amongst credible and un-credible individuals leading up to Friday’s Cowtown Tip-Off.  The one fact that came out of this trial/experiment was that it is a doable piece and the game could be better for it.  There were three shot clock violations and four operator mistakes (watching the game and not restarting the clock on the change of possession)  in the ten games I watched at North Crowley high school. The two major arguments can it be staff and does hurt the less talented teams. I (Alan Branch) knows that it presents a additional learning curve for college freshmen.

Traylyn Spencer Leads the Way

August 6, 2020November 9, 2017 by Alan Branch

Traylyn Spencer leads the way both on and off the court.

Traylyn a 6’7″ SF/PF at O. D. Wyatt H.S. past, present and future says he is leading. We at Texasboysbasketball.com are taking a look at why and where Spencer goes from here and how he got to this point. The 2018 signee has worked his way through the classroom, three grassroot seasons and is beginning his third season on varsity.  Spencer has sealed his verbal commitment to University of Arkansas at Little Rock as UALR is a competitive member of the NCAA division one Sun Belt League where the league RPI was in the top twelve of the (34) division one leagues in the country.  ULAR is a huge opportunity for Spencer and from time to time, stable D1 programs have the opportunity to bring in a prospect with this kind of upside and potential on and off the court.

Traylyn has the responsibility to lead as shown here with his four younger siblings.  Being a senior, a three year varsity starter, holding a 950 verbal/math SAT score with 3.0 gpa  and now the first D1 signee for fourth year head coach Demarqus James who is in his first high school job, Traylyn epitomizes the words first, pioneer, and leader as he has demonstrated with his body of work that he is up to the task.

Basketball is huge vehicle for Spencer but he loves the game as he expresses on dead balls with his contagious smile.  The 6’7″ versatile forward said,”On defense I am most comfortable from the basket to 15 ft out with opportunities to rebound and block/contest shots/steal the ball. Then I love when it is time to run to the other end with more opportunities.”

Spencer is active 4/3 forward with good length who has proven he can and does affect the game in a positive way on both ends. The Sun Belt league allows the appropriate level for Spencer to develop and potentially shine at the national D1 level.  There is a huge opportunity for Spencer, in my (Alan Branch) opinion we will get a good look this 2017-18 season where pre-season top 15 O. D. Wyatt will be in pursuit to a deep playoff run.

Memorial Day (GASO Day 1)

October 30, 2017May 28, 2017 by Alan Branch

The story of the day was the team effort of Texas Impact.  The DFW metroplex based group coached by Terry Thomas got wins over the talented Lone Star Elite (DFW) and YES 2 Success Select (San Antonio) led by #1 2019 Charles Bassey.  We watched 12 games closely while gazing next court over to take in another 4-6 which made for good days work. I was very impressed with the 2021 BMM team playing in the 17U/NBA division where they competed consistently to get a win and a competitive loss.  This type of showing will do them well when we go to the 2021 board for initial top 25 2021 in September 2017.

Kaden Archie  6’7″  2018  Wing Urban DFW Elite:  Kaden (#5 TBB) was the most domiant player on my plate for day one.  His Jimmy Butler type approach toward the game makes the long athletic 6’7″ wing affect the game from one end to the other.  Although I would love to see he and (Butler) shoot it better but positive production is a good thing.  Archie just makes plays by any means necessary always improving his team’s chances of winning. Urban DFW Elite got two big margin wins day one in a not so competitive environment.

Grant Sherfield  6’1″ 2019 PG  YG36

Every time I see this kid he answers the bell.  Today was no different while he was having good shooting day from both the arc and mid range.

He didn’t ever get all of his guys going but did enough to get a win with numbers on the score board.  He will have to do more as the weekend goes to get to the thick of the championship.  We all know the high major prospect is talented and at the top of his class.  I am excited to see the remainder of the weekend how uses his ability to get paint touches at will to push his team through bracket play.

Samuel Williamson  6’6″  2019  Wing   Texas Impact

Samuel is still difficult for some to swallow but in my experiences, I have seen this picture before and I like where I think it is going.  It is a lot like the first time I saw Sam in August 2015 at the Cream of the Crop Camp (Duncanville, TX).  He just has a feel for detail and energy which yields productivity with very little error. This weekend was no different with his team mentioned earlier doing well in two of the most competitive games of the day. It helps that he plays with one of the purest point guards in Texas  Xavier Bryant 5’11” 2018  PG  Bryant is learning how to lead and secure from the neck up. His ability to disrupt his opponent’s offense and get in to the opposing team’s defense at will provides  opportunities for the Texas Impact group.

Addison Wallace  6’31/2″  2018 1/2 Combo  Lone Star Elite

Wallace is another smart worker, staying about the business of diligently seeking the best opportunities for his team with his strong shoulders and high IQ.  He has made a point in the 20-25 games I have watched the Cleburne native  to show that he was the toughest player on the court. The full time ball guard could be another one emerging from shadows of the over populated player state of Texas. I am looking forward to watching how he the 0-2 Lone Star Elite group bounce back after after a tough day one.

We have identified 25 plus notable players for this weekends watch list and found three new sightings like 6’7″ 2019 J B Mukebi Southwest Elite. We will be back tomorrow on this long holiday weekend with more basketball and hopefully players.

Vincent Lee, 2018 PF - Lone Star Elite: Lee did a solid job guarding Grayson Carter on the block as he timed his jumps when Carter was attempting a hook or a baby fadaway. Offensively, he made smart passes on the block and scored off the bounce some from 12-15 ft out. Mid+ to HM JyDonn ... Read more

Dallas Mustang Classic “It’s was a Hoopfest”

May 22, 2017 by Alan Branch

The Dallas Mustang Classic is one of three local grassroot program based events that we (TBB) make an attempt to not miss.  I (Alan Branch) as longtime grassroots basketball advocate wish that the big three or four could come together on 3-4 solid dates to be inclusive of full field of area prospects.  This would create a incredible evaluation environment that the kids would truly benefit from.  Meanwhile the Dallas Mustangs Classic had competitive windows that quench the thirst of services/media entities

Vincent Lee, 2018 PF – Lone Star Elite: Lee had a double-double vs Dallas Showtyme on Sunday and he played hard on both ends. Lee is making a name for himself as a prospect.

JyDonn Griffith, 2018 PF – Lone Star Elite: Griffith was effective on the glass and defensively  blocking and altering shots. Griffith has consistently played well all weekend and also has in the past month.

Addison Wallace, 2018 PG – Lone Star Elite: Wallace is primed to have a big July. The guard scored off the bounce and facilitated the ball well and was huge in the second half against Showtyme, contributing to the last 8 points before OT.

Jase Townsend, 2018 PG – Dallas Mustangs: Townsend was on fire in the championship game as he scored 25 points with 15 coming in the first half. Townsend play was efficient as he got to his spots.

Devin Mitchell, 2018 PF – Dallas Mustangs: Mitchell competed and made plays on both ends. He shot the ball well and showcased defensive versatility.

Lamar Everd, 2018 SG – Dallas Mustangs: Everd had one of the most impressive showings this past weekend as he scored, facilitate and defended well. Had some highlight plays and was influential in Mustangs success this tournament.

Brendan Obineke, 2018 PF – Dallas Mustangs: Obineke length stands out and he used it to his advantage at the Mustangs Invitational. Made mid-range jumpers and rebounded well on both ends.

Jordan Phillips, 2018 SF – Dallas Showtyme: One game that stood out was Phillips game against Lone Star Elite as he took control of the game and got to the lane for a layup or drew a foul. Phillips showed why he is a top 10 player in his class in Texas.

Calvashawn Darthard, 2018 SG -Dallas Showtyme: Darthard showed his defensive abilities as he moved laterally and was active. Darthard also had solid offensive outings as he played his role and averaged about 9 points.

Grayson Carter, 2018 PF – Dallas Showtyme: Carter continued to show his inside and out game. Averaged a double-double this weekend and made clutch shots.

Matt Garigga, 2018 SG – Dallas Showtyme: Garriga shot the ball at a good percentage and did a good getting in position to make a play. Garriga is a player that we have been impressed with in the past two months and think the next live period will be good for him.

Donte Houston, 2020 PF – ProSkills: A long forward that can score off the dribble. Houston  made big plays late in games and is a prospect we will keep an eye on.

Sam Freeman, 2019 F – 3D-Wolverines: Freeman didn’t consistently get in a rhythm but he blocked shots and ran the floor well as he averaged a little over 2 blocks a game this weekend.

Max Abmas, 2019 G – 3D – Wolverines: Abmas can get hot quick and he showed that this weekend. He had a solid game against Peak Performance Pacers and on Saturday shot the ball over 45% from the field.

Sterling Hopkins, 2019 PG – Dallas Mustangs 16U: Hopkins managed the game well for his Mustangs squad and scored inside and out. Hopkins averaged about 6 assists a game on Sunday, leading his team to the championship game.

John Pereira, 2019 PF – Dallas Mustangs 16U: Pereira on Saturday had one of the best performances we’ve seen from him but couldn’t get in a rhythm on Sunday but Pereira showed what type of player can become.

Jarred Fields,  2018 PG – CYM: Fields had a strong showing this weekend as he scored and got his teammates involved. Fields shot at a high percentage on Sunday and made big plays for his CYM squad.

Kobe Jones, 2020 PG – Court of Dreams: Jones did a good job playing up and scoring off the dribble. Seen improved play from at the point guard. and scored in double figures in the games we got to watch him play.

Joshua King’Walker, 2020 PF – Texas Warriors: King’Walker showed versatility on both ends and filled the stat sheet in his Sunday morning games.

Complete 94 Feet Day One (San Antonio, TX)

October 29, 2017April 15, 2017 by Alan Branch

San Antonio, the capital of Central Texas still thrives to own its roll in a mega state like Texas.  The mentality that the 4 & 5 Star players have to go to a DFW or Houston area teams to prove their worth has slowly evaporated.  San Antonio Hardwork wasn’t a lot different than many of the upstarts in the central region of TX but their actions have allow them to separate themselves from the pack.  Complete 94 Feet is one of their signature moves with an event that signifies quality over quantity.  After five years of existence a sense expectancy looms every spring in anticipation of the “Complete 94 Feet”. Hardwork holds the honor of the first full blown sneaker contract team in central TX/San Antonio. In spite of all the high level players San Antonio has produced, (From Shaq to  Jordan Clarkson) Hardwork is the first. This year with the exit of 2018 Gerald Lidell to Dallas , the “Complete 94 Feet” has more prospects than ever that polish this event into one of the best kept secrets in TX.  Day one was a short day but the five game slate  on court one harvested strong crop of 2019’s with a good group of 2018’s and some promising 2020’s.

Russel Barlow, 2018 C-Hardwork: Barlow averaged a double-double in two games. A big contributor in the paint for Hardwork and is continually improving.

Trey’Von Hopkins, 2018 CG-Oklahoma PWP: Hopkins was in a zone on offense as the athletic guard had a strong outing vs Yes II Success.

Samuel Chaput, 2018-YIIS: Chaput came off the bench and was very productive in his minutes. His game against PWP was one of the best performances from a point guard on Friday. He continues to show how under rated he is in the state of TX.

Larry Wise, 2018 SG-YIIS: Wise was looking to attack when the ball was in his hands. Against Hardwork, Wise aggressive play with key in second half run for YIIS.

Charles Bassey, 2019 PF-YesIISuccess: Bassey showed why he is the top of his class. His presence on both ends was pivotal in YIIS going 2-0 on Friday.

Kevin McCullar, 2019 SG/SF-Hardwork: McCullar was efficient today scoring wise. The guard/forward from Wagner HS is looking to have a breakout Spring/Summer.

Jahmius Ramsey, 2019 CG-Hardwork: Ramsey, we are high on and in the two games for Hardwork, he had solid scoring outputs plus decent assist numbers in both games. Ramsey is one of the top guards in 2019 in Texas.

Victor Iwuakor, 2019 PF-Hardwork: Jaws dropped when Iwuakor would go for a block or dunk. He doesn’t need to score to be effective and Iwuakor plays his role very well for Hardwork.

Bryce Thompson, 2020 CG-Oklahoma PWP: Thompson is a freshman but holds several offers already. Guard that went hot in the second half for his team.

Jahari Long, 2020 PG-Team Simms: Like how unselfish Long plays and he has good size at the point guard position. One of the top guards in Houston in his class.

Caleb Lohner, 2020 SF-BMM: Lohner has grown in statue and IQ that allows his skill set to shine. He had a big game against Hardwork with 20 points and played through a second half injury.

Micah Peavy, 2020 SG/SF: Peavy had a stretch in his second game that showed his ability to affect the game on both ends while making teammates better. When Peavy showcases everything he can do, he is a matchup problem with a developing upside to impact the state.

Texas Invitational (Pasadena, TX)

October 29, 2017November 21, 2016 by Alan Branch

img_0933

The Texas Invitational answers the bell for the 14th time as a staple in Texas high school basketball.  The Texas Invitational is no different than any other major event in basketball, “who are the players and whats the story”.  Forty-eight high school teams, two divisions that move to six brackets that split into twelve brackets after the initial two pool games on Thursday.  One  of our fundamental beliefs at Texas Boys Basketball is that teams house players and players make up teams. It is a a lot like the chicken and the egg both are necessary, but at TBB we tend to focus on the players.  This year there were 27 prospects that were either house names or absolute eye catchers. Twenty-seven prospects is enough to keep me busy over three days but there was one class of 2018 question that had to be answered.  Who is the the number one play in the class 2018 in the state of Texas?  6’4 1/2″ point guard Quinten Grimes 2018  was a priority at 9:30 am on Thursday morning.  The opportunity for Grimes to open up against Lancaster HS lead by 2017 PG T. J. Starks (Texas A & M signee) was huge. Going into the TX Invitational Pasadena, TX Grimes was clearly was one of the five best ones in 2018. Three days of observation brought clarity to Grimes position as the number one 2018 prospect in Texas.  Grimes is a complete package of size, skill, and athleticism. His ability to score in bunches,  find teammates in both transition and half court settings allow Grimes to be a consistent threat.  It is clear that Quinten puts forth maximum effort in maintaining team chemistry as he grows his clutch gene.  Quinten looks to be on a progressive tract while scoring 25-35 points, 4-7 rebounds, with 5-8 assist per game.  Grant Sherfield 2019 PG was as poised and steady as any player in the field.

Cream of the Crop 2020/2021

May 13, 2017August 25, 2016 by Alan Branch

The opportunity to see another group (class of 2020) step into the status of prospect was exciting experience this year.  The Cream of the Crop Camp formerly know as the Acie Law Camp introduced its sixth class to what it takes at the next level (H.S). Milton Barnes (Play Right Basketball) lead the curriculum in the 8 hours of both on/off the court teaching to give the young fellas some idea of what success looks and sounds like. PLAY RIGHT BASKETBALL is predicated on teaching IQ and  understanding how to play recruitable basketball.  When ever I watch 12,13 &14 year old kids there is a lot of box checking, projection and most of all inventory assessments.  The kids were expose to coach ability, NCAA initial eligibility, offensive reads, defensive angles, spacing and movement w/o the ball, all the foundation of playing recruitable basketball. Twenty players played in the Top 20 game but in my observation there were a few others.  The one thing we tried to stress with parents, guardians, club coaches and kids, is that it is a long way to spring of of 2020. The questions is how are you the player going to spend your time on/off the courts. Here are a few observations (not evaluations) on some of the consistent performers.

Gavin Thornton    2021                       5’6″           PG               M.S.

Solid ball skills going both ways, developing feel for leadership, scored some. Learning to be a point guard.

Jim Cofer                 2021                       6’1″           Forward    M.S.

Developing perimeter player that found some success. Effort was the story of his camp. Looking forward to seeing more.

Julian Larry            2020                      6’0″          PG

Jamor Mallard       2020                      6’2″          WF

Jamor was at his best in transition, he finished in traffic and through contact.

Jack Slaughter       2021                       6’6″          Center       M.S.

High energy post that ran the floor and contested shots, rebounded on both ends in and out of his area. He also showed a developing ability to score over both shoulders.

Kylil Anderson      2020                       6’2″           WF

Kylil was solid all around player on both ends. He rebounded and competed on both ends also scored some from 12-15 ft. with solid wing ball skills.

Caleb Lohner         2020                       6’6″           3/2

Lots of talent and ability with tremendous upside as his understanding develops. Caleb demonstrated that he could consistently score 22ft to the and above the rim. Showed good developing ball skills in the open court.

Tyler Pinder          2021                        5’8              PG                    M.S.

Tyler show the posture and understanding that could allow him to be a true point guard. He was a willing defender with good understanding of team concept. His speed and IQ are his best assets as he develops.

Traejon Davis       2020                        6’4″           Forward

One of the most versatile players at camp.  Coach’s dream, guarded all five position. He scored and rebounded with the desire to win.

Colton Benson     2021                         5’8″            2/1 Guard        M.S.

Showed to be the best shooter at camp on Saturday but also demonstrated some understanding of spacing and team defense. Ball skills and confidence were really good for a young kid.

Journey Phillips  2020                        6’1″            SG

Good size guard with solid skill set and effort that makes plays. Must play more to learn and develop feel.

Darryl Brown       2020                        6’4″           Forward

Played with strong skill set 12-15 ft. Solid instinctive player and good rebounder. Developing defender.

Ben Joelson          2020                       6’5″             WF

Good polished player, skilled for his age. Energy was good and look for opportunities with and without the ball.

Cole Roberts         2021                       6’1″              4/3                  M.S.

Rebounded anywhere his team needed.

Lafayette Pate        2021                   5’7″                  Guard             M.S.

Solid kid that passed and scored some.  Played hard on defense and made open jump shots.

Darious Whittington 2020            6’1″                  Wing

Talented wing with versatility in all (3) perimeter positions. Nature feel for offense’s.  Developing rebounder and defender.

Elijah Stephens        2021                 5’3″                  PG                    M.S.

A fast guard that was effective in open space. Developing good on ball defender. Understands how to get separation from bigger/stronger defenders.

Others:

Carlos  Miller            2020                5’9″                   PG

Point guard clearly knew who and what he is. As his strength improves or body catches up with his IQ he will become more confident.

Dakota Sterling        2020                6’2″                   SF

Strong body player that was up and down but showed flashes of being a good player on both ends.

Dallas Hobbs             2022                5’6″                   PG                     M.S.

The high IQ guard was the youngest player at camp.  He must continue to understand how to manage in close quarters with bigger stronger guys.  His hard work is definitely showing up.

Jones Shuts It Down in the Capital

November 18, 2016December 15, 2015 by Alan Branch

Andrew Jones 6’4″ 185 pg brings his recruitment to a comfort zone. Andrew is another Texas prospect that clarity came late for. The high major lead guard grew 4 inches and gain 35 pounds in the last 16 months. We remember the 5’10” shooter at the Texas Grassroots Basketball events 3 years ago that was constantly competing and looking for an opportunity. The reality of his talent has resonated with the country now and the University of Texas/ HC Shaka Smart are the beneficiaries.

So many times in recruiting the hardest worker doesn’t get the player but this time hard work paid off. Andrew said, “I actually looked forward to coach’s calls. He always had infomation that made me better both on and off the court.” “I can’t wait to play for this guy.” Assistant coach David Cason and H.C. Smart locked in and now they have number three done with some more work out there.

Andrew discussed how he got to this point. Jones said, “Man, my dad has been everything for me in basketball. He showed and taught me on and off the court everyday.”  “Having a sister (Alexis Jones-Baylor) like Alexis that could always get it across to me. A mother that was no nonsense and competitive provided me with everything I could hope for to be a player.”

Andrew is averaging 28 pts,10 rebs, and 7 ast. thus far this season. The three year varsity starter has developed from ground up right before our eyes the right way. In todays society where it is more about the frosting than the cake, Andrew has shown to be a player about substance. Andrew said, “Now I can get back to work without any distractions and get better.”  “I want to work at getting stronger and lower on defense, also on offense with the ball.” “The pick and roll is something I am a constant student of.”

Andrew continues his high school career at Irving MacArthur after losing in the 5A state semi-finals last year. His hopes are of hanging as many championship banners as he can before he is done. He spent his first 6 years playing for his father Head Coach David Jones and Texas Express. Jones spent one cycle on the EYBL with Jeff Webster and ProSkills.

Nate Morris Finds Home in the SEC

November 18, 2016October 28, 2015 by Alan Branch
The 6’10” 250 lb. Morris has not been a stranger in the DFW prep/grassroots basketball landscape.  I have watched him grow for the last four years into legit high major prospect.  Morris said “I understand the up and down nature of the business, so I control two things: playing and defending hard.” “I have to continue to develop my body and skill set.”  Nate Morris sits at the #10 spot on Texasboysbasketball.com (where the top 20-24 players go to a BCS conference) but could easily move up with the upcoming high school opportunity to repeat as 5A state champion.  Lancaster is loaded with D1 prospects relatively speaking in the context of a high school program.
Morris expressed that the recruiting process has been up and down, therefore when it got down to decision time he look at people he felt a level of comfort with.  University of San Diego, Tulsa and Ole Miss were the three he selected from but the opportunity to play in the SEC against a lot of other DFW natives and good competition was enough to convince him that University of Mississippi (Ole Miss-Oxford, MS) was the place for him.
Nate Morris said, “I love my mother for always being there for me no matter good days or bad, she has missed only (3) of my games that I recall.”  The Dallas Mustang program ( Tony Johnson and Steve Miles) was Nate’s home from the 6th grade. Lancaster high school and Ferron Douglass have been his home for all four years (completing his 4th year now) of his H.S. career.  That says a lot in these days and time.

The last run at an opportunity to verify, identify or clarify for all parties (players, coaches and scouts). The July NCAA evaluation period is unique in the fact that there are any legitimate distractions for the college basketball industry and players are free for summer break. The majority of the player have been seen by college coaches and scouting services, now it is in the process of closing out opinions, deciding to offer or letting parties know how they real feel.

TBB Day 1 & 2 Duncanville, TX

November 18, 2016July 25, 2015 by Alan Branch

The second segment of the July evaluation period keeps college coaches scrambling for airports, rental cars and interstate highways. Once again the Lone Star state (TX) provided another quality option to be a destination for PLAYERS ! The Texas Boys Basketball staff of three got locked for the 1:45 pm start with the Urban DFW-Perkins vs. D1 Elite being the kickoff feature. The older 2017 guard tandem of Curshank and Starks was to much for one of the most talented 2018 groups in the country. Gerald Lidell 6’7″ wing, 2018, #9 ESPN national and top 3 Texas Boys Basketball, Rusell Barlow 6’9″ 4/5 top 10 TBB and 5 other top 20 TBB guys was clean look and good start. Day one of pool play we were able to see 26 teams for a half or more.

Top Performers:

– Fabian White (6’7″/2017/PF)

White continues to play at a high level on both sides of the ball. White utilized his length defensively and utilized his feet to create position early offensively. White’s aggression combined with his fundamentals and basketball IQ make him a tough cover for any opponent.

– Andrew Jones (6’4″/2016 CG)

Andrew has grown two inches and continue to prove the combo guard title from July 8th thru pool play July 17th back home in DFW. He is playing well but still showed crazy upside.

– Clevon Brown (6’7″/2016 PF)

Clevon was consist on both days of pool play the undersized PF showed flashes of a Quincey Acey clone.  The intelligent well spoken kid you get in the interview transforms to beast mode with developing feel and skill set.

– Jarrett Allen (6’10″/2016 4/5)

Allen continues his tear, proving game after game why TBB considers him the top player in the state of Texas. From step throughs to jump hooks and monster dunks Allen will make a coach very happy next year.

– Adrio Bailey (6’6″/2016 PF)

Bailey the very bouncy power forward continuously brought his high energy above the rim play every time he stepped on the court. Bailey finished some big time dunks.

Texas Only McDonald’s All-American

November 18, 2016May 5, 2015 by Alan Branch

This is a dream come true” said Juwan Evans as we sat in a nearly empty section of The  United Center during McDonald’s All American media day. “It’s a dream to be here but it is also an opportunity to show what I can do competing against the best players in the country.” Juwan an Oklahoma State signee is the only All-American from Texas this year. “It’s a real honor to be the only player selected from Texas, with all the good players we have in the state of Texas to be the only one selected is a humbling.” Although Evans is the only player selected from Texas this year to play in the McDonalds game, Evans is not originally from Texas. Evans grew up in South Carolina attending his first two years of high school at Legacy Charter before his family moved to Dallas and got to play for legendary Kimball head coach Royce “Snoop” Johnson. “ I have had so many blessings in my life, especially playing for Coach Snoop that one year, he is an amazing coach and even better person. Not a lot of people get to play for a coach who has won six state championships. This year without him on the sideline he has been great, talking to me about the game but more importantly talking to me about life.”

Evans has showcased his talent over and over again throughout his time in Dallas. He played a nationally competitive high school schedule and played on the EYBL all summer. Evans is a pure point guard with a lot of strengths and few weaknesses. When asking about what he perceived the biggest strength of his game, Evans replied, “ I see the game, I love making plays for teammates, and I am never scared to take big shots.” Evans is an extremely humble and kind young man and is a great representative of the high school basketball in the state of Texas. Basketball needs more young men like Juwan Evans.
